Appium, Selenium, and Robot Framework offer strong foundations for building custom AI-powered solutions.

Integrating AI frameworks requires some programming knowledge and expertise in AI concepts. Yet, the open-source nature allows for exploration and experimentation at a lower cost compared to commercially available AI-based automation testing tools.

Generative AI is very likely to become a great helper for software testing services in the future. But GenAI now is still very green. Let’s get to know this little kid and prepare for what he can do for us when he’s all grown up.

How GenAI Works

Generative AI is a subfield of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Where it differs from the two is its focus – creating new data rather than analyzing existing info.

  • AI encompasses a wide range of technologies that enable machines to mimic human cognitive functions like learning and problem-solving. Think self-driving cars, chatbots, and recommendation systems.
  • ML is all about training algorithms to learn from data and make predictions or decisions without explicit programming. Consider a spam filter learning to identify spam emails based on past data.
  • GenAI centers on generating entirely novel data (text, images, code) based on learned patterns from existing data. For example, that’s how DALL-E, Jasper, and GitHub Copilot work.

There are different techniques used in generative AI. But let’s review a simplified explanation of a common approach – Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs).

Two Neural Networks

A GAN consists of two neural networks working against each other. The first one, the generator, tries to create new data samples that resemble the real data it has been trained on.

The Discriminator’s Role

The second network, the discriminator, acts as a critic. It receives both real data samples and the generator’s creations and tries to distinguish between the two.

Continuous Learning

Through an iterative process, the generator keeps creating new data. And the discriminator keeps refining its ability to identify fakes. As they work against each other, the generator gets better at creating realistic data that can fool the discriminator.

The Result

Over time, the generator learns to produce high-quality, realistic data that closely resembles the real data it was trained on.

You might think that GenAI isn’t that different then. It learns from real data. And creates data that’s original but similar. But it’s the same as a book inspired by another book. Or like a painting of the same scenery but drawn by different artists. Would you say that such works are replicas? No. They’re their own creations, albeit somewhat related.

So, the big thing about GenAI is that it creates, not reproduces something else.

How Can You Use GenAI for Software QA Services

GenAI tools for automation testing aren’t really a thing yet. Don’t get too excited right now. But GenAI has immense potential. Yet, since it’s just taking root, we’re not entirely sure of how this potential will turn into practice.

So, for now, the baseline for GenAI use looks like this.

  • Test case generation. Generative AI models can be trained on existing test cases and user behavior data to automatically create new test cases.
  • Data augmentation. GenAI can be used to produce synthetic test data. It can be particularly useful for testing web apps or APIs where real user data might be limited or sensitive.
  • Automatic test script repair. AI models can be trained to identify and fix minor issues in existing test scripts. Remember those self-healing tests we mentioned earlier? GenAI can take that to a new height.

The studies and experiments with GenAI are still ongoing. And you shouldn’t jump onto shiny headlines that promise for GenAI to abolish QA engineers and developers. It’s simply not where GenAI is at right now. And it won’t be for quite a while.

Limitations of GenAI & Why It’s Not Your Dream Solution

Specifically because generative AI is still so young, its limitations are mostly related to development. For instance, GenAI needs specific data sets. Gathering, filtering, and analyzing this data is a task to behold. And AI models need gargantuan amounts of info and lots of “learning rounds” to produce a decent output.

Next, to consistently provide reliable results, GenAI is to be transparent and realistic. In other words, we need to be able to explain how and why it arrived at a certain outcome.
If we talk about GenAI’s general constraints compared to human abilities, well, there’s nothing really new about it.

  • AI might struggle to understand the overall context and purpose of the software. While QA engineers bring their real-world experience and understanding to identify creative and unexpected test scenarios.
  • Algorithms might not be able to adapt to situations outside their training scope. A person, on the other hand, can use their reasoning skills and problem-solving abilities to identify the root cause of issues and suggest appropriate solutions.
  • It may be tricky for GenAI to replicate the intuitive and exploratory nature of human usability testing. Observing user interactions and identifying usability issues often requires human judgment and empathy.
  • Artificial intelligence models can inherit biases from the data they’re trained on. And that is a sure way to get skewed or incomplete test coverage.

Overall, we’d like to highlight one thing – take every resource with a grain of salt. Some articles hail AI. Some bash it to direct attention to particular issues (like fear of AI replacing humans). You need to focus on gathering info from both sides and come to your own conclusion. Better yet, try experimenting with AI tech in your project. If your budget and product allow for it and can profit from it.

To Sum Up

We can’t really say whether AI is objectively “good” or “bad”. It’s helpful. But what would be the long-term impacts of it on the IT sector and the world – that we just don’t know. The only thing we’re sure of is that human intelligence and creativity won’t be overshadowed by AI for a while. Perhaps never.
